The technique of brush painting is no only very old, but also one of the most extended techniques, in Asia predominantly. Although invented by the Chinese, it didn't take long to form different currents in every region. When talking about brush painting, a distinction between Korean brush painting, Vietnamese and Japanese brush painting is inevitable.
When brush painting was first introduced, artists painted their works with brushes made of bamboo and black ink on hand-made paper.
However, in time, the technique was improved by introducing new and better quality materials, along with slowly adding color to what once had been an exclusively black painting. This was regarded as a daring extension of the ancient brush painting codes, which only allowed a tone variation in the black ink. Decade after decade, brush painting has been approached by European painters, as well.
